Social Media – What’s a Tweet Anyway?

Have you heard people talking about Twitter and tweeting and wondered if they are speaking a new language? I did, until I looked into it and figured out that it is a useful and quick way to put out a link to information that you find to be informative or useful.

You’ve only got 140 characters to work with, so you have to keep it brief. As much as I hate to replace the word ‘to’ or ‘two’ with the number 2, ‘you’ turns into ‘u’, sometimes it is necessary when ‘tweeting’. Tweeting shorthand I call it!

I find Twitter most useful for forwarding on interesting links to content, either my own or someone else’s. You can search through your fellow twitterers profiles by keywords or subject matter (recipes ,marketing) to find people posting content that you are interested in. Then you click to ‘follow them’. They’ll probably come to your profile to see what you’re ‘talking’ about and maybe follow you back. The more people you follow, the more followers you will gain, unless you’re a famous person, then everyone’s just following you! When you are being followed by someone, or visa-versa, their ‘tweets’ show up on your page, and your ‘tweets’ show up on their page. If you want to reply to someone’s tweet, you type @ followed by their username and your response will show up on their home page. It took me awhile to figure that one out.

If you like a ‘tweet’ from someone you are following and you want to broadcast it to your specific group of followers, then you can ‘retweet’ it. This will then show up on the home pages of those who are following you. Same basic concept as Facebook and ‘friending’ someone. You can then see each other’s posts. This is how some things go ‘viral’.

So you can see how this would be a useful tool in getting your content out there. If someone likes your blog post, then they will ‘retweet’ the link to their group of followers, and someone in their group of followers might ‘retweet’ it to their followers. You get it. Once they are interested in what you have to say or offer, they will come looking for you. Social media teachers will tell you to get out in front of the traffic, instead of chasing it. Much less exhausting!

So I hope this has helped you figure out what Twitter and tweeting is all about and how it can help you get yourself out there on the www. Thursday I will be talking about different ways in which you can use automatic integration applications (Hootsuite, Ping.fm) to broadcast across a variety of social media networks with just one post!
