Proper Training – A Dying Art?

I can’t remember the last job, if ever, that I felt adequately trained in. Now, I have been working full-time since I was 17, other than the years I was raising my children. Then I returned to work part-time. So, I wrote my last post because it relates to this subject. I feel I have been ‘flying by the seat of my pants’ for many years. Some people persevere and move forward, and some people move from job to job. I persevered, but didn’t enjoy the extra stress that lack of training puts upon everyone with whom you work with.

It seems that the jobs I have been doing since I quit working at the church have all been severely lacking in training. I signed up with a company to become a merchandiser – you go into a variety of stores as a representative of different companies and brands and service their products. Now, I consider myself to have a pretty good head on my shoulders, but I started seeing terms like planograms and schematics that seemed like you might need a college degree in engineering to decipher them! You had to do resets, and read these planograms to determine what type of fixtures went in which notch. Doesn’t sound that difficult, but the pages and pages of details made my head hurt. So I muddled through – there was no oversight. People could have easily taken advantage of this system. You did your reporting via a website. My first job was to go into Sams Club to put out current magazines on the floor. They warned us that it had not been done for 6 weeks. Okay – so in we go – another gal and I. We went into the back room and there were pallets full of boxes, full of magazines! Where to start. We opened up the boxes to find the most current issues and tried to stay organized. We managed to get the issued placed out, but that wasn’t the end of the job. Every magazine in those boxes needed to have the front cover torn off, counted by price point and logged as far as the number being trashed. Are you kidding?? I was happy that I was only going to spend one day on that job, but felt bad for whoever needed to finish with the tearing and counting task. What a nightmare!

Next I worked at the YMCA, behind the desk, greeting people when they came in and working in the database with memberships, classes and such. They gave us a quick tutorial, then sent us out to ‘shadow’ current representatives. They explained that we couldn’t possibly be shown all of the computer transactions we would need to process. One or two common ones would have been nice! So bad habits and improper transactions got passed from one representative to another. Every time we could not handle a question or computer transaction, we would have to ask the customer to wait and go find a management type person to come and help us. How efficient is that – not at all. It just did a disservice, to the customer, the rep and the supervisor. But they were quick to come and find you when you didn’t input a transaction properly. Why does that always seem to be the way. Life is busy, but if you want a job properly done, you must take the time to adequately explain all aspects to whoever you want to help you. It’s just that simple, but doesn’t seem to get done as often as it should. I don’t know about you, but I hate flying by the seat of my pants. Input is good!
