What’s Inside Your Box?

How many times have we heard people say “think outside of the box”? It seems to be a favorite phrase of many. But what I would like to do tonight is ask you to focus on what’s inside your box. We need to know, and be secure in our foundations, before we can successfully go outside of the box, don’t you agree?

So what’s inside of your box? Who are you, what do you want to accomplish in your life, your business, your career, your family? I have been receiving free business mentoring from a SCORE counselor (if you’re interested, seek one out), who is named Tom Loegering. He has been a successful entrepreneur for many years and is now giving back by mentoring people in their business ventures. He wrote a book (more of a workbook) called ‘Success or Failure: The Choice is Yours’. In it, he tells you to write your own epitaph. What will people say about you after you’re gone? What would you like them to say about you?

He asks you to determine how much money you would like to make, when you would like to make it by, and what you would be willing to do to achieve that goal. It has been very challenging for everyone to come up with that monetary number and the concrete goals needed to achieve it. You wouldn’t think it would be a difficult task, but it is.

So before you start to think outside of the box, look inside of your box and examine who you really are and who you aspire to be. What are your foundational beliefs and are you living them? What do you want to achieve in your life – what footprint do you want to leave on this earth when you leave? What legacy do you want to pass along to your family? Get out a mirror, Tom always says, and look in it daily. The person in that mirror is the only one keeping you from achieving what you want in your lifetime, and the person in the mirror is the only one who can help you achieve your goals. It’s all up to you – a daunting task some days! So it has really been theraputic being mentored for my business – it is essential that we focus on ourselves from time-to-time. This is especially difficult for me – a wife, a mother and a daughter always come first in line and I’m usually an afterthought. So take some time to focus inside of your box – make an appointment with yourself and do it! You might be surprised what you find inside…until tomorrow.
